As this year’s college commencement ceremonies approach, many students are feeling overwhelmed by the mental stress they have faced since high school. Although they have worked hard, many have realized that their four years of education were not as successful as they had hoped because they never learned how to move from being a student to being a professional. In reality, it is not difficult to make this transition since most employers are willing to help employees learn the skills and knowledge needed for success in their jobs.

However, even with this help, many employees become discouraged and lose hope because they do not know where to start and feel like they do not know enough about the position they want. Fortunately, there is one approach that can solve these problems: learning by doing . This technique is especially useful for people who are new to the workforce because it gives them an opportunity to learn about their job, become familiar with company culture, gain new skills, make friends with co-workers, and gain the confidence they need to succeed.

Traditional teaching methods

The learning by doing approach is based on the idea that people are more effective learners when they are actively engaged in doing something. This approach differs from traditional teaching methods that use self study or lecture-based learning where students do not have any direct contact with someone who is knowledgeable about the topic being taught.  By contrast, this approach requires students to engage in a hands-on, interactive learning experience with an expert who is more knowledgeable about the topic being taught.

The goal of learning by doing is to help students develop skills and knowledge needed for success. To do this, individuals need to be able to identify the gaps between their current knowledge and the new knowledge required for success. This way, they know what they need to learn and can create a plan that allows them to become successful on their own. By training employees in an environment that provides continuous feedback from co-workers and/or management, individuals can develop both technical skills and soft skills that give them a competitive advantage over their peers.

Interact with customers

For example, employers can benefit by teaching employees how to interact with customers, to build their own networks for referrals, and to work on problem solving skills.  Additionally, employers can use this approach to improve the quality of the work produced by their employees.

By learning by doing , employees will develop both technical skills and soft skills that give them a competitive advantage over their peers.

Using the learning by doing approach is not easy nor does it come naturally for all employees. Some potential employees already know about their job and know all the tasks required for success; however, they find themselves frustrated when they are told that there are more tasks that they have not yet mastered. This may lead to the employee feeling like they do not know enough about their job and that they need more training to become successful.

New to the workforce

For example, a club manager who is new to the workforce needs training on how to plan, schedule and run events. However, once this individual has this knowledge and begins planning and scheduling events, he or she may feel like they still do not know enough about how to be successful which could lead them to think that they need more education.  This “I don’t know enough” mindset can be avoided if employees start by learning how to walk before trying to run.

By learning how to walk first, employees can practice their skills and learn how to develop new ones.  When employees know what they should be learning and how to accomplish this, they can make a plan and learn as they go. The more time you spend on the basics and the less time spent on making mistakes, the more likely you are to succeed at your new job.

Working on the fundamentals

By working on the fundamentals first, employees will develop skills that lead to success. For example, if an employee works as a waiter without knowing how to dine at a table (a skill that requires interaction with customers), then he or she will have difficulty interacting with customers or remembering orders because this is not part of his or her job description .

By using the learning by doing approach to train employees, you will help your company develop and retain talent that can develop into leaders and transform your organization into a successful business. This approach also supports employees’ development by giving them the chance to engage in critical thinking skills. This way, graduates can enter their jobs ready to take on new challenges and achieve success through problem solving skills they developed while attending college.
